Search for a hotel near the Ganga river in Varanasi and you will find hundreds of results. Most of them are not near the river.

That is the first thing to understand about this city. Varanasi bends along the western bank of the Ganga for several kilometres. The ghats, the stone stairways down to the water, are the reason people come. But the old city behind them is dense, narrow, and closed to vehicles in its final stretch. Plenty of hotels described as riverside sit a taxi ride and a long walk from the water.

The distinction matters more here than it does in most places. It changes what your morning looks like.


What "near the Ganga" usually means

There are three broad positions a hotel can hold.

On the ghat. The building opens onto the river steps. You walk out of the door and you are at the water. Only a handful of properties in Varanasi can say this honestly. Most of them are old palaces or havelis, because the land was granted centuries ago and never released.

In the old city, close to a ghat. A few minutes on foot from the water, inside the lanes. Good access, no view. Often very good value.

In the Cantonment. The colonial district north west of the old city, near the railway station. Wide roads, larger hotels, easy arrival. Several kilometres from the ghats, which means a taxi each way, and the evening ride is slow.

None of these is the wrong choice. They suit different trips. But if the river is the reason you are coming to Varanasi, the third option means you will only meet it on scheduled visits.

Why being on the ghat changes the stay

The Ganga is not a static view. It runs on a clock.

Before sunrise the water is grey and almost silent. Boats push off with a single oar. By six the light turns and the far bank, flat and uninhabited sand, goes gold. People come down the steps to bathe. Bells start somewhere upriver.

By mid morning it is quiet again. Washing laid out on warm stone. Kites. Someone reading.

At dusk the aarti begins downriver at Dashashwamedh. Lamps, drums, and a crowd that gathers on the steps and in boats out on the water.

If you are staying on the ghat, you are inside all of this without having planned any of it. You are not arriving for the aarti. You are already there. That is the practical difference, and it is why people who have been to Varanasi before are so particular about location.

Being on the ghat is not the same as having a river view

These two things get confused often, so it is worth separating them.

Old palaces were not designed as hotels. They were built around courtyards, with thick walls, shrines, and rooms that face inward by intent. In most heritage properties along the ghats, only some rooms look out over the water. The others face the courtyard or the rooftops of the old city.

Ask directly before you book. A property that is straightforward about which rooms face where is telling you something useful about how it runs.

Maharana Mahal, on Rana Mahal Ghat

Maharana Mahal by Brij Om stands on its own ghat in Bangali Tola.

The palace is 17th century Mewar, Rajput architecture set down on the bank of the Ganga. It has watched the river for four hundred years. A Shiva shrine still in daily use sits inside the building, and an ancient tree grows up through the structure. Neither was moved to make room for guests.

There are sixteen rooms across three types.

The Ganga Darshan Suite has a private chhajja over the river. The Kaashi Suite opens onto a private baramda with the Ganga in front of it. The Benaras Heritage Room faces the palace aangan, the inner courtyard, with the city humming quietly beyond the walls. Two of the three look at the water. The third looks inward, and that is deliberate.

Kinara, the rooftop restaurant, sits high above the ghats with the river in front and the old city glowing behind. Pravaah, the patio café, is set within the royal patio, also overlooking the Ganga. Neither takes reservations.

Getting here

The palace is reached two ways, and both are part of the stay.

By boat. From Namo Ghat, a traditional wooden boat carries you along the Ganga, a twenty five minute passage past ancient ghats and temples, arriving at Maharana Mahal's own ghat steps. Forty steps up from there to the hotel.

On foot. From Madanpura, a nine hundred metre walk through the old lanes. A member of our team walks with you and carries your luggage the whole way.

The lanes closest to the ghats are closed to vehicles, so tell us your arrival time and we will meet you.

When to come

October through March is the season. Clear air, cold mornings, and the river at its best in early light. February is the busiest and most expensive month in the city.

April and May are hot and rates drop sharply. If the heat does not put you off, the ghats are close to empty and the palace is at its quietest.

Dev Deepawali, the November full moon night when every step of every ghat is lit with earthen lamps, is the biggest night of the Varanasi year. Riverside rooms go months in advance.

Is the hotel actually on the river?
Yes. Maharana Mahal opens onto Rana Mahal Ghat in Bangali Tola. The steps down to the water are directly outside.

Do all rooms have Ganga views?
No. The Ganga Darshan Suite and the Kaashi Suite face the river. The Benaras Heritage Room faces the inner courtyard. We tell you which room you are being offered when you enquire.

Can I watch the Ganga aarti from the hotel?
The evening aarti takes place at Dashashwamedh Ghat, along the riverfront from us. Most of our guests watch it from a private boat on the water, which we arrange.

How do I reach the hotel with luggage?
Either by boat from Namo Ghat to our own ghat steps, or on foot from Madanpura, about nine hundred metres. Someone from the team meets you and carries your bags.

How many rooms are there?
Sixteen, across three room types.

Is it safe to walk around the old city?
Yes, including in the evening. The lanes are busy and well used. If you would rather not go alone, a member of the team will walk with you.
